9 Steps to Hiring Security Personnel

The most important role of Security Personnel in any organization is that of protector and guardian. Security personnel is the guardian of all property and all people on the Company property.

Hiring Security personnel is one of the most important functions and responsibilities of security management. Therefore, great care and attention is required to hire the right individual and “avoid sending the fox to guard the hen house”

Following are tips to meet the minimum standards, which apply to the lowest entry-level position – the security officer. 

  1. The applicant must be free from any physical or emotional disorder or handicap that would preclude meeting pre-determined performance standards.
  1. The applicant must demonstrate responsibility, maturity and honesty. This can be verified through prior history of employment, community involvement and or pursuit of education. 
  1. The applicant must not have a conviction of any crime involving moral turpitude.
  1. The applicant must exhibit the right attitude and possess good people skills. 
  1. The applicant must be responsible and honest. 
  1. The applicant must be polite and helpful, yet prepared to challenge people when necessary. 
  1. The applicant must be able to use initiative and make quick decisions. 
  1. The applicant must be interested in the security of people and organizations. 
  1. Policies and procedures must be implemented to ensure an effective recruitment and selection process.
